GoDaddy + WordPress + WP-Cache = 500 Internal Server Error
June 13th, 2008
About a month ago over on TheGreenRocket.com (TGR) we started being victim to an off-and-on stability that resulted in a near perfect 50% site downtime experience. I assumed it was a plugin issue at first but I wasn’t sure which one it could possibly be since I mass added the plugins I became accustomed to adding on every WordPress site I created.
I compared what was on TGR with what I had on Webtertainment.tv (WTV). I deactivated all the ones that didn’t match up and intended to turn them on one at a time after that. No luck.
I then turned them ALL off on TGR and reactivated them one at a time. Also no luck!
I had to consider comparing differences outside WordPress plugins at this point: TGR was on GoDaddy.com and WTV was on Lunarpages.com. So the issue therefore MUST be GoDaddy. Instead of calling them I Googled “GoDaddy WordPress 500 Internal Server Error” and exercised my Google-fu.
VOILA!
First link on the page confirmed it all on a blog titled “Ramblings of a Bored Geek” (GivverOnline.com); the error was indeed GoDaddy and WordPress, and in specific the WP-Cache plugin! It was an momentous and exciting day (for a geek like me) and once I followed the articles suggestions the server errors were forever bye-byed.
I experienced a bout of this internal server error when I went back to VivaLaEvolution.com to check something. I was confused for about 2 minutes before I recalled the experience described above. I had forgotten the details of the fix, I Google-fued it, and the Bored Geek came to the rescue once again. This is why I wanted to blog about it. I figured I may just need to remind myself again in the future and just in case the Bored Geek goes offline at any point, this extra post may help ease the frustration of many concerning this delema.

I am glad I could help. I have informed GoDaddy about the problem and the fix but they still play dumb if you call and ask about it. Personally I have since stopped using WP-Cache and switched to WP-SuperCache instead. There are regular updates and there is no modification necessary to make it work with GoDaddy.
