A Super Mario Noir Short? There Will Be Brawl: Twilight Ruin!
November 6th, 2008
A short film has been discovered that I wish had been discovered sooner. Zach Grafton and Matthew Mercer have created a whole new world inhabited by retro-heroes of old in a whole new light… or dark… like noir dark. And awesome.
The Mushroom Kingdom isn’t what it used to be. With corruption ruling the land behind ineffective law, compounded with a recent series of grizzly murders, an unlikely hero begins to take to his destiny.
I’ve got a soft spot for Mario and Luigi. They are a part of my past, my youth, the magical pipe warp that led me to a world of video games. I have to admit, nowadays I don’t care much for the new Super Bro brands. For me, these two Joe Plumbers were the essence of triumph. I was addicted to the early Super Mario brothers, and when I couldn’t play it anymore, I longed for mushrooms, magical flowers and falling pills in my dreams.
Another thing that has been on my mind for at least a year now is making a parody Noir Film. The ideas come and go, the time to produce a short film is as hard to come by as a turtle coming down a set of steps that you can get infinite lives on.
This short film re-inspired me. The production values are top notch and the early Nintendo lore is remarkably integrated into this grungy, darker, world of dames, corrupt cops, intrigue, drugs and gangsters. I think this film just made my year.
