post Boosterific Birthday Cake

October 22nd, 2009

Filed under: ComiXtrips, Geekdom — NunoXEI @ 12:51 am

When my friend asked me if I’d be home after midnight tonight I immediately knew something was up. This is a humble guy who doesn’t do “surprises” and doesn’t fit in with the normal mold of folk who celebrate holidays of any kind (to more of a degree than even I). His name is Rui DaSilva, him and I are currently co-creating/writing The Aquatic League of Heroes webcomic and aquatic hero support site.

There’s another under-dog character I defend almost as much as Darkhawk. The character is Booster Gold. One of the first issues I had a few years before I jumped on to comics strong with the Archie Ninja Turtles stuff, and eventually got won over by Darkhawk, was Booster Gold #7.

I’d always remember that issue number because Superman guest stars and whops Booster’s ass. I always respected the lesson I knew would be learned from that experience even if I never got another comic of Booster Gold (until now, 20 years later). Something about the concept of the character intrigued me because it broke the mold of “the norm”. I finally just bought the Essentials collection that collects the first run of the series in the mid-80s. I just read the issue Booster Gold saves President Nixon and Vice-President Bush from an alien shapeshifter assassination/take over. (Go Booster Go! Talk about a guy who now fights to fix time blips huh?)

Anyways… here is the result of Rui hearing me rant one time too many times about my second favorite under-dog comic hero of all time:

  • Oh ya I gotta thank Laura Rickard for being the one kind and skilled enough make this cake for me. Whenever I think of insane projects for people I usually just get laughed at, but she actually stepped up and accomplished this one….as a mook she’s a keeper.

  • Wow… well whoever this Laura is–she’s crazy as well. More crazy to support crazy people with their crazy ideas. But of course, from me, my mouth, and my tummy, many thank yous are handed out to her!

  • If you aren’t reading it already, I would highly recommend the current run of Booster Gold. I’ll admit that I’m somewhat biased in that I absolutely love time travel stories but I feel like they’ve found a great niche for Booster as his two main themes (Time Traveller and Looser) come together as he protects the Time Stream while using the fact that everyone thinks he’s a screw up to keep from drawing attention to himself.

PS. Happy Birthday. That’s one cake that won’t end up on Cakewrecks.

  • That’s what ultimately brought me fully onboared. I already bought all the trades, now it’s time to crunch through them. Debating getting the 52 run as well just for some extra content. Seems comic readers are on a 50/50 fence about whether I should pick those up or not :) .

  • Here’s my take on 52:
I am a gamer. It started with an obsession with AD&D when I was in my early teens, vanished in high school and came back when my then girlfriend/now wife introduced me to Vampire LARP in college. After college I shifted to table top and Mutants & Masterminds in particular. I had been playing M&M regularly and started to pick up a Graphic novel here and there when 52 came out. My biggest worry with comics had always been crossover and 52 was something that was going to take place during its own time without any outside influence so I started reading it. Today I have a pull box with my local comic shop that I walk down to once a week for and most of the comics I’m reading involve characters from 52. Booster in his own, just finished Strange Advenutres, looking forward to the conclusion of the Animal Man mini, Starfire in Titans, Batwoman and Question in Detective Comics…. if DC would just get something ongoing for the Marvel family I’d be happy.

  • Haha! Thanks for your opinions! So you got hooked in by the massive company event much the same way I did with Marvel’s War of Kings cosmic event with Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, Starjammers, Inhumans… hopefully Darkhawk ongoing again…

I’ll just go ahead and get the 52 trades as well then–I’ll let you be the one that finally pushed me over the fence!
