Beholder Series #7: Blueprint Magazine, “Youth Issue”, July 2010

In the summer issue of Blueprint Magazine, volume 10, issue 1, the theme was “Youth” and the Beholder Series made a final page appearance with a strip involving a necromancer father and his dead son… and his unique way of copping with the situation and “moving on”. This idea stemmed on the idea that when we’re young we seem to be fearless of death, but when we’re old we can’t help wishing to avert death and be young again. You can read the whole Youth magazine online.

1st LOAH Fanart Contest Winner: Kraken by Tomi Dzurovski

The winner is chosen for the first of what will assuredly be more contests to follow!

I can not stress enough how hard it was to pick just one… not just for ME as one of the judge but for all the ten judges. We each had a reason to pick our #1 choice and it’s remarkable to me that it was as versatile as the background of the judges. While recording the votes as they came in over the last 2 days I was on the edge of my seat as I watched numbers go up neck in neck.

I am extremely glad I did not have to choose the winner on my own and I am glad the winner was choosen as diplomatically as I could arrange. So, without further ado, the winner is Tomi Dzurovsk’s submission featuring Kraken!

Thank you all for not only taking the time to submit pieces for this contest and giving it a shot. Even if you are not regulars of the League of Aquatic Heroes site of webcomic there are not enough thanks we can give, trust us!

We all loved the submissions and are so very honoured to show them on the site proudly under the Fan Art page.

First Seasonal LOAH Fanart Contest – Last Call!

Alrighty folks! I’ve made another change to the LOAH fanart deadline. This contest ends on SATURDAY, JULY 24th! I want to respect the entries that actually hit the first deadline and feel bad letting them wait further. I haven’t heard confirmations of anything new coming in over the past week, so that’s that, and it’s time to move on!

I’ve gathered TEN judges–all with different perspectives, men and women, young and old, artist and non-artist–which include the two creators, Nuno Teixeira and Rui DaSilva, and the strip’s artist Nikola Temkov.

Each judge is selecting their three favorites, not based on ANYTHING in particular other than the pieces “feel right” to them and therefore get chosen. This allows for different skill levels to be taken into consideration amongst other variables. I will award points to each entry: 3 points for 1st choice, 2 points for 2nd choice, and 1 point for 3rd choice. I will add them together and from there get the WINNER!

Thanks to all the participants once again! I was so happy with the turn out and will definitely do this again! Good luck all!

LOAH Fanart Sketch by Stefan Kocevski

Sometimes I am lucky enough to stalk–er I mean–come across fanart done by artists that I’m lucky enough to add to Google Reader early! Stefan Kocevski is one such artist and I discovered this wonderful sketch featuring the LOAH crew on his blog. Stefan did the Fanart Contest Entry of Boston Crab.

This is a real fun sketch and he was nice enough to let me post it in the fanart section! I love how Boston Crab is in the background in a faint sketch holding a massive iron anchor–cause he totally WOULD beat something with that damn thing! All great designs all and all!

First LOAH Fanart Contest and Future Content Update!

Alrighty, so July 15th was yesterday, and technically the “last” day of the contest! First off I gotta say, holy leviathan all the entries are special ones to me, one and all! I have to thank Nikola Temkov in specific for finally convincing me to get one of these up and running. I couldn’t be more happier with the results.

It’s always great to see other artist interpretations of characters, be it from Marvel, DC, old 80s cartoons (Thundercats in particular :) )… but it’s become a genuinely moving experience to see that done to these creations in particular.

That said: I want to extend the deadline to August 1st July 24 for this first fanart contest. Furthermore, I’d like to run one of these every season going forward (so every 4 months).

The story arcs for LOAH might take a break after this current arc comes to an end, but I’d like to keep content alive. There will be a few shorter strips, one-shots, or 2-4 part strips after “Beast of Blackwater”. I may even try my hand at a few strips as it’s been a while since I’ve drawn!

Nikola Temkov has brought a wonderful look to the strip, capturing the “silver age” feel that Rui DaSilva and I believed the strip required to start with. Nikola will be back and solely responsible for all tales that eventually culminate with the inevitable fight against Aquarius! This includes the origin story of Boston Crab (next) and the unraveling of some mysteries tied to Captain Kraken (2nd strip for a hint).

Thanks everyone for participating in the contest, coming to the site and reading the story thus far, and continued support nto the future! It’s a pleasure making these strips and even more pleasurable when people are enjoying them!
