Beholder Series #12: Blueprint Magazine, “Gender Issue”, February 2011

The February issue of Blueprint Magazine, volume 10, issue 6, focuses on the theme of “Gender”.

I was tempted to return to a character introduced last year in the “Sex” issue (October 2009) of Mr. Graystone / Fox Tail, the sexuality-curious doppleganger (a neutral-sex shapeshifter). It would have been fun, but it also would have defeated the purpose of the Beholder Series, which specifically acts as a window into the World of Hellmouth, focusing on new characters and scenarios each time.

The direction I went in instead was to capture a culture on Hellmouth with aspects fashioned after the Sarmatians–where in Greek lore, were the daughters of Amazons and Sythians. This strip features the Visigraad culture, a mix of Nordic and Visigoth, and a warrior from the Wild Lands which mix Russian and Mongol cultural elements. I liked the idea of taking the “becoming a man” scenario (first kill, first battle, first hunt, etc) to the Visigon daughters. I amused myself with the notion that to “become a woman” they had to spill blood in battle (a very male concept of power and might). For a Visigon, I wanted it to represent a requirement or equality from any they should wed.

I swear, if it weren’t for these Beholder strips, these closer looks at the regional cultures of the World of Hellmouth might take another 5 years to record down! Doing hte research for visuals, lore, concepts, design, and history is always the most fun part about creating any new element for Hellmouth. The north has always been put on the back-burner and I’m glad it had a chance to be explored this month.

Beholder Series #11: Blueprint Magazine, “Fetish Issue”, January 2011

The January issue of Blueprint Magazine, volume 10, issue 5, brings in the new year with the theme of “Fetish” and you’d think with a world inhabited by fiends this would be a simple theme to tackle, but it wasn’t.

I ended up turning ideas around in my mind for months. I think I got through five ideas before I realized all of them felt to obvious and on the nose. I couldn’t have that. I actually wrote an email to Morgan, the editor, saying I was going to bail on the January issue as the deadline was the next day. Well, with a few encouraging words and a revisit to some already done Raven nevermore pages, I restitched some panels together and rewrote a script around them to achieve the above strip. I’m actually quite happy on how it turned out!

Beholder Series #10: Blueprint Magazine, “Money Issue”, November 2010

The November issue of Blueprint Magazine, volume 10, issue 4, the theme was “Money” and this turned out to be a very difficult theme to find a piece about that was a little more than the obvious “money is evil” angle.

The bird-thing in this piece was an early developed character in the World of Hellmouth, designed by Pablo Peppino, named “The Cuckoo King”. He’s a vulture demon gone insane. This speaks of the idea of how people who live in poverty seem to enjoy life more, they tend to enjoy moments and interactions happily, other than the hustle and bustle of large rich cities that are consumed by technology and getting to the next place as fast as possible that they forget to enjoy special moments they pass by until it’s too late.

Beholder Series #9: Blueprint Magazine, “Secrets Issue”, October 2010

The October issue of Blueprint Magazine, volume 10, issue 3, focuses on the theme of “Secrets” and as a way to tie it into a more monstery goodness idea for Halloween, the Beholder Series focuses on a Arabian-themed idea of a demon summoner calling forth an ifreet (fire genie) to grant her full knowledge of the secrets of man.

The idea here is that in all of human history, there have always existed secrets in the form of secret societies (free masons), religions (Christianity), crime (Mafia), government (too much), so for one person to consume it all would surely make them made beyond the reason to even comprehend it all.

Beholder Series #8: Blueprint Magazine, “Orientation Issue”, September 2010

The September issue of Blueprint Magazine, volume 10, issue 2, the theme was “Orientation” bringing in the new school year for the students of Waterloo.

The Beholder Series returns for another year with new Editor, Morgan Alan. This strip involved the theme of feeling lost or lacking direction. Here a Greek/Roman themed warrior seeks the advice of the ancient Gray Oracle, a sphinx known for answering in riddles. The core idea represent to me that, regardless of any fears blocking you from seeing what your future is, the future will still happen regardless, so just live it.
