post Why the Superman Character Sucks

[See more funny videos and funny pictures at CollegeHumor.]

This is why I hate Superman as a character. He ruins things by… um… saving things…

One day I just know I’ll figure out the magical reason comic fans drool over Sups–and don’t throw mental turmoil about “this” or “that” at me as a viable angle for extra character dimension. Sheesh.

post 2 Candidates 1 Debate Video, by Goldentusk

I am not sure why today is turning into US politics day over here on NunoXEI.com, but just so happens if that’s all I see in my web subscriptions, then that’s what is going to stand out.

I first discovered “Goldentusk” after watching an episode of Diggnation where he was brought up in reference to his Batman: The Musical parody on YouTube done to the original Batman theme song. If you haven’t seen this video, I added it below at the end of this post… because it’s about Batman. And I love Batman.

My name is NunoXEI and I’m a Batmaniac.

Back to the video above though… I actually laughed out loud. If the reference of the parody is not evident to anyone reading this blog or watching the video above, then I’m sorry, but I’m not going to be the one to link to it or even point out the reference. You’ll have to do your own digging. I’ll just say that my connection to the original reference video was from reactions of other YouTubers who watched it.

I am a very curious person… but I’m not THAT curious. My stomach is a sensitive thing and watching people react to 2 girls and… Oh, almost got me… reacting to the REACTIONS of that video were sometimes enough to make me lose my bowels through my mouth. Just saying.

The above video parody was the kind of comedic awesomeness that makes me wish I thought of it first. So simple.

Bonus awesomeness from Goldentusk: Batman musical song done over the original Batman theme song. Enjoy!

post Comic Book Movie Buzz for Aug 12, 2008

August 13th, 2008

Filed under: ComiXtrips — NunoXEI @ 7:22 am

I just got re-inspired to start up a new Hollywood Stock Exchange account. I had one I started about six years ago now when the Iron Man movie was nothing but a dream and a penny stock over on this fun little time killer. Years later (and much wishes that the game was real) I was turned into an instant multi-millionaire!

Anyways, onward then to the second instalment of this new series on comic movie news!

Worthy Time Killers or Worth a Chuckle

DC Comics Meets The Simpsons - Ever wonder what DC characters would look like if Simpsonized? Well Dean over at Springfield Punx has gone ahead and skipped the step or curiosity!

Fresh Prince of Gotham - I used to love Fresh Prince of Belair when I was younger so this parody video was worth a good couple chuckles. The actor sings out quotes that are actually pretty damn close to the original. The fact that he can mix them up into the lyrics is golden.

The Inevitable Alliance - First we get G.I. Joe/The Thing in stop motion; now we get this masterpiece that took a year to make with over 3000 photos. This one is a longish one but it’s worth the watch as some of the fight sequences are pretty entertaining considering they’re coming out of toys.

… More entertaining than The Spirit fight sequence from Comic Con in any case linked down below…

The Spirit of What Exactly…?

Some footage got leaked from Comic Con showing a fight between The Spirit and his arch-nemesis The Octopus. I’m going to go right ahead and quote the rant over at BamKapow.com on this one. No point in wasting my time repeating my fearful thoughts after seeing this clip. I hope the trailer doesn’t end up being better than the movie with this one.

Frank Millar’s debut as a director could hurt any chances of a potential Daredevil actually “rebooting” the franchise. Lets hope this all comes together this Christmas.

Watch More About The Watchmen

There are a bunch of clips from Behind the Scenes stuff for the Watchmen movie. If you want to get yourself caught up on why this movie WILL succeed in pleasing the fans, then clicky click and start watching!

Hearing a director talk about their project is often times a good sign as too how much personal knowledge and affinity for the material they actually have. Zack Snyder doesn’t disappoint.

Yahoo Behind the Scene Clips

Superman Begins Again (Hopefully)

I never cared much for Superman, and the strange thing is that something about Smallville actually made me find interesting things about the character actually existed in some creative team’s mind! If you ever wondered about Superman Returns having done nothing for all your anticipations; or perhaps wishing that studios could look at that movie as another Ang Lee’s “Hulk” scenario… then you’re not the only one! Mark Waid, Grant Morrison and Brad Meltzer also have opinions about rebooting the franchise.

Saving Superman - Comic Book Creatives Try to Fix the Franchise
Superman Needs To Start Over! STAT!!

Batmania Continues

Who Should Be Next Villain for Nolan’s Batman? Comic Writers Weigh In - A bunch of comic book pros give you their picks for who should be in the upcoming Batman movie.

If this post is any indication as to who the next adversary will be, then it seems to be weighing heavily in on the Catwoman choice for multiple reasons. This combined with gossip about Angelina Jolie talking to her porn star friend Tera Patrick about the Catwoman role, I can’t help thinking the new advertising model involves turning the rumour mill to let the internet hounds gobble it all up and spit it all back out to others (like I just did). <burp> Excuse me.

Captain American’t

Captain America movie in CGI - If this internet buzz is more truth than rumour, it’ll be a sad, sad day in Marvel-movieland for fans. This could single handedly destroy the crossover awesomeness that is in the Marvel movie making framework thus far.

What could be so off-putting for Marvel Studios to make a call like this? It’s like they never made enough money on Iron Man or something?! Maybe Increadible Hulk didn’t perform as well, sure, but to take a step back like this has mega-disaster written all over it.

To Magneto or Not to Magneto

“Magneto” Defeated By “Invisible Man”? - David Goyer, screenwriter for the Batman franchise is set to direct the Magneto movie. Word has it though that he’s interested in another project that may come first: The Invisible Man.

He’s got a take on it that could actually be quite interesting on screen. It involves the nephew of the first Invisible Man and Scotland Yard setting him up as a secret agent.

Paris Hiltoon

Paris Hilton Set to Be Super Heroine — Please… why? That is all.

post Comic Book Movie Buzz for Aug 6, 2008

August 6th, 2008

Filed under: ComiXtrips — NunoXEI @ 6:50 pm

I’ve been actively ignoring a desire to run a weekly “Comic Book Movie Buzz” piece on NunoXEI.com, but I’ve finally accepted the inevitable! Welcome to the first installment of this series which I’ll presumably release every Wednesday recaping news highlights from the previous week. [Update: No I won't do this weekly or anymore :)... other plans in the works when time permits!]

Worth a Laugh Links

The 6 Worst Comic Book Super-Husbands - It’s difficult for an article on Cracked.com to fail when it comes to pointing out the obvious in the most obnoxiously funny way possible that you want to smack yourself for not thinking it in the first place. This article points out the flaws of some of the top supers and why they suck in the husband department.

The 9 Unmanliest Superheroes - Now let’s all take some time to snicker at the “unmanlyness” of the heroes on this BamKapow.com list. It’s a shorter read than Cracked.com articles, but retains a similar type of humor.

Secret Pants Sketch Comedy presents “Bush or Batman” - A sketch comedy group hit the streets to ask a bunch of people whether they quotes they read to them were said by the 1960’s Batman or George W. Bush. The resulting video is an amusing watch.

G.I. Joe stop motion re-enacting Carpenter’s The Thing - G.I.Joe and John Carpenter’s “The Thing” come together in a briliantly constructed, and AMAZINGLY well done animation. Best experienced if you are a fan of both!

Heath Ledger’s Joker X Ronald McDonald- A little part of you wants to know what that amalgamation would look like right? Well, here it is!

Batmania Continues

The most active talk on the Batman front is that of Angelina Jolie being the next in line for the role of Catwoman, Johnny Depp for the role of The Riddler, and Philip Seymour Hoffman for the role of Penguin. I’ve already posted my thoughts on these three Batman cast options last week, but it seems the rumour mill is still keeping on top of these stories.

‘Arkham Asylum’ Scribe Grant Morrison Opens Up Heath Ledger’s Joker Diary - Heath Ledger kept a “Joker Diary” that listed things Joker would think was funny. Many of these things came directly from a prose novel written by Grant Morrison. The book was called “The Clown at Midnight” and the journal bits even freaked Morrison out a bit as too how closely studied this relatively obscure piece of fiction was to fans in general.

Will Superman Return Again

Comic-Con wrap-up: Are superheroes done for? - Zac Snyder has turned down doing a Superman sequal because he believes,”He’s a tricky one nowadays, isn’t he? He’s the king daddy of all comic-book heroes, but I’m just not sure how you sell that kind of earnestness to a sophisticated audience anymore.”

I agree. The first reboot(?) movie did nothing for me. My opinion is that they take this right to the BEGINNING and try again with a modern edge. And for the love of all things powerful, I love the potential of Lex Luther, but he’s no proper enemy for a superman movie anymore. Continuous support villain organizing the antagonists, yes… lead villain, absolutely not.

Green Lantern Gets the Green Light

It’s been in talk before, but now it’s back! Green Lantern–one of the members of The Justice League–might actually get a shot at the big screen. Warner Brothers has moved The Green Lantern movie into active development. For those who don’t keep tabs on character backgrounds, here’s the one the film will focus on:

Each sector of space is protected by a Green Lantern, possessing a power ring that uses a powerful green energy to do anything within the limits of the user’s imagination and will power. When the Green Lantern assigned to this sector of space finds himself dying on planet Earth, he tells the ring to find a suitable successor. The chosen replacement, hot-shot test pilot Hal Jordan, finds himself with a new job he never expected.

Justice League Still Twitching

It seems this movie, for all the potential disastrous choices so far, is still determined to be made–for good or for bad. This is currently re-slated for filming in early 2009. Megan Gale’s screen test performance for Wonder Woman seems to have confirmed her future role in the film.

Friendly Venom Spinoff for Sony?

Only one very important point here worth mentioning: Venom is ANYthing but a friendly neighbourhood anything! He didn’t even raise one hair on my body due to creep factor. Already that’s a great lose and one of the greatest failings of the third Spider-Man movie for me. (YES, even more than the emo scene which I actually thought was funny. Yes, I said it. Judge me now, Judge me!)

Sony isn’t necessarily holding onto Topher Grace for the role as they believe he may not be strong enough to hold the new trilogy together. Venom being a symbiotic alien goo allows for the whole franchise to carry on in a new character other than Eddie Brock though, so nothing much lost here. What NEEDS to happen though is to make Venom darker, creepier and give him the maniac edge that he deserves. Venom should have been a main villain in a Spider-Man flick not a supporting one. Epic Fail.

Xsiting X-Branding News

Lionsgate To Release Wolverine And The X-Men - Lionsgate has announced they have acquired the home entertainment rights to Marvel Entertainment’s Wolverine and the X-Men which will begin airing on the Nicktoons Network in January 2009. The first DVDs will be released later in 2009.

Leave it to the studios to milk the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine property for all it’s worth! Who’d ever think Wolverine could lead the X-Men anyways? Well, maybe in an alternate universe… or in a cartoon for kids…

Dare We Speak of Another Daredevil?

During a discussion between Frank Millar (300 and soon The Spirit) and Jason Statham (The Transporter) a new reboot idea for Daredevil came up in with Statham would be totally up for playing lead role as the blind red street avenger. Millar sees him more as a Bullseye, but Statham won’t accept anything BUT a chance at the lead role.

For many, it is not known that Frank Miller was the guy behind much of the Daredevil development during the 80s which added much needed depth to the superhero. If anyone can direct a reboot, I’d put money on Miller being the guy to do it.

Give Us More Iron Man, Man

I honestly never believe Robert Downey Jr. would have been so good for the part of Iron Man–or good as an actor in general. He really grew on me. So, as much as I didn’t care about Iron Man before the movie, I’m freakishly onboard for the next instalment of this character AND the actor behind the titanium suit.

Downey, Jr. talks more Iron Man 2 - Downy has confirmed there will be no Hulk in the next film during an interview but also confirmed that there will absolutely be another Avenger cameo–he just doesn’t know which one yet either.

post Three Rumoured Archvillains for Third Batman

July 31st, 2008

Filed under: ComiXtrips — NunoXEI @ 3:13 pm

With the crazy cinema success that Batman: The Dark Knight is getting, it’s only natural that leaks about potential new villains for the third film hit the news stands–or the rumour mill.

Luckily for readers out there I am a Batman news bloodhound! During my daily blogroll RSS scan-through, here’s what’s come up for the potential future of the Batman franchise!

First Suspect: The Riddler

In one of my previous posts, Post Dark Knight: Nolan Leaving, The Riddler Coming?, I mention the lead rumour of The Riddler being the next in line for Batman to take down.

At the time of that post there was still no potential name attached to the role. Well one just came out, and would it surprise anyone to learn that Johnny Depp is the guy? Johnny Depp has been a favorite actor of mine since I saw him in Edward Scissorhands, a Tim Burton film, where he plays a silent scissor-handed guy who falls in love with a teenage girl… and turns out to be one hell of a great lawn sculptor… snip snip snip…

Back when I was thirteen years old I never understood a thing about an “actor’s range” and how truely rare it was. Most actors get type-cast into a archetype that they rarely SUCCESSFULLY get out of throughout their career. Johnny Depp may be an example of the opposite. He seems to be the guy to go to when you want a unique perspective on characters–and he delivers!

With his last roles retaining a quirky nature–Willy Wonka, Jack Sparrow, Sweeny Todd–I’m a little fearful that he’s going to fall down the pigeon-hole trap. I have faith though! If anyone can pull off a “re-envisioning” of a Batman lead villain like Heath Ledger did with his Joker performance, Depp is the guy!

Reasons Why I Believe This is a Rumour

As much as I’d like to see this become reality, Depp has a line-up of films in pre-production and/or announced: Sin City 3 (2009) (in production) (rumoured); The Rum Diary (2009) (in production); Dark Shadows (2010) (announced) (rumoured); and Shantaram (2009) (pre-production).

If Batman 3 gets set for a 2011 release Depp would theoretically need studios co-ordinating his filming schedule around 2-3 films (assuming The Rum Diary wraps up sooner than later). I’m not saying this is an impossibility, just not a scenario I’d like to raise my high hopes on.

Second Suspect: Catwoman

It’s been reported that Angelina Jolie is up for the role of the new Catwoman. Whether or not this role is for the upcoming Batman 3, or whether it’s for a spinoff franchise is not confirmed. Can I only say, PLEASE, if this is a spinoff of the Batman films, REBOOT it and split it off of the Haley Barry Catwoman. Angelina Jolie has the potential to pull a “Christian Bale” on the roll an hold together a trilogy for any smart movie studio.

The Catwoman character, if tackled with the same sense of reality as the new Batman series, can have the potential of drawing in movie goers of both sexes much more rapidly an with way greater ease when attached to a strong female personality like that of Jolie.

Catwoman is a symbol of power, freedom and sexuality–something that will draw men and women to the ticket booth without too much begging from either partner. This would be a perfect counterpart to WB’s Batman.

Reasons Why I Believe This is a Rumour

Having Catwoman in the third Batman feels like it would be too soon. That’s my first opinion. Sure they did it for the second Batman in 1992 with Michelle Pfeiffer, but that was a different time, with a different direction. Would it be nicely lined up with the Rachael Dawes relationship being over after The Dark Knight? Yup, absolutely. Bring in another love interest to maintain that all-important “love perspective”.

You know, the more I type about this the more I feel like I’m proving why it WOULD work as a truemor instead of as a rumour. In any case, my second opinion is simply that this character profile holds it own as a separate film with the proper direction.

Third Suspect: The Penguin

Onward to the third role rumor turning in the mill. Philip Seymour Hoffman is in talks for the rol as The Penguin. This discussion is not a new one as it was “reported by a spy” as a landed role for The Dark Knight along side Heath Ledger who had not yet confirmed The Joker role. Made fresh once again, it’s time for the fanboy frenzy to begin!

I still recall the role as played by Danny DiVito in 1992 in Batman Returns. This was a time before that early franchise didn’t plummet in a nipply-armor-grave-pit. I wish I knew more about Hoffman to really have an opinion of the kind of potential he has in bringing a refreshing look at the short, awkward, money-loving gangster.

The character offers the same reality-based angle necessary to keep the rebooted Batman franchise going with such superior force. He can simple be a mob boss that puts a thorn in the side of the underground regulars like Salvatore Maroni. Adding a Catwoman to the script would bring this arch-nemesis duo WAY too close to Batman Returns and thus I believe everyone can safely scratch that reality off the list!

Reasons Why I DON’T Believe This is a Rumor

It’s a lower profile villain character in the mind of the general public–even lower than The Riddler in my opinion. Maybe it was the green spandex with the question marks that confirmed that character’s staying power in the minds of non-Batman fans–who knows?

The Penguin can be really grounded in reality and can fit into the current franchise’s look and feel. The Mob plot has been sneaking throughout the storyline for the first two movies already, I’d gamble that the third film will return to this story in much more force and dedication.

What I also believe though is that The Penguin won’t hold a movie together one his own. There will be a second–there’s always a second. It’s a pattern I’ll commit my hopes to, and my guess is The Riddler… just not played by Johnny Depp.

Here’s to seeing if I nail ANY of these! I’ll be posting new content as things come up!
