post NunoXEI Gets Brad Sucks

September 17th, 2008

Filed under: Music — NunoXEI @ 6:00 pm

My Lady MediaChick asked for a picture and I delivered! My day no longer sucks now that I’ve got my two Brad Sucks albums. “Out of It” is playing as I type! It may not be evident yet how much I really love Brad Sucks, I just want to make it extra clear: Brad Sucks does NOT suck!

All his music is free to download and you pay what you want IF you want to pay for either downloads or CDs. I have tired of the mp3 and burning them to play on 20 hour road trips isn’t enough–I needed to support this guy and I’ll tell you why!

Brad represents what I appreciate the most out of the web and most importantly out of artists who are going out on a limb to change the way the industry works. Sure, bands like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have gotten all the news this year, but this dude’s been doing this since 2002! He even releases all the source files so that anyone can remix his stuff.

He inspires me to continue to do what I do–whatever that may be, cause hell if I know! I just want to make stuff and have people enjoy it. I entertain myself, and as long as I can do that with the process of making creative works, then that’s the most important part of my journey.

Here are a couple links to let you know how much I think Brad Sucks rules:

Just In: The Band “Brad Sucks” Lies About Sucking : I find Brad Sucks on Jamendo for the first time. Here is my review of his first album “I Don’t Know What I’m Doing”.

GenCon Indy 2008 Inspires New Song and More : After getting back from GenCon Indy, all the D&D and gaming talk made me want to put it to music. Brad Sucks had the source sample, so I figured, pft why not? Here’s my D&D remix of “Making Me Nervous”!

post GenCon Indy 2008 Inspires New Song and More

August 23rd, 2008

Are you a RPG gamer? A collector card guru? A miniatures maniac? Or are you a geek like me that mostly just bards it up with bits of all of the above? Well, with GenCon freshly in my mind and a 3-foot tall tower of newly bought RPG books to read through I couldn’t help but be inspired to right a D&D inspired song.

I re-cut the awesome Brad Sucks song “Making Me Nervous” with my new lyrics–which unlike Brad Sucks, may actually suck. 1. I am not a singer, 2. I am not a sound engineer, 3. I used the USB mic from Rock Band to capture the audio :). Enjoy!

Last week I hit up GenCon Indy in Indianapolis. The road trip was, for the first time, not costly on my car; no flat tires with 400 miles to go, not key scratch along the whole left side of my Honda Civic, no pot hole damage to my axis and alignment. It was just perfect–just like the beef jerky I got along the way (a spicy Italian sausage flavoured one, mm-mmm).

I’ve uploaded all my GenCon pics to Flickr, please check them out, I’ve left comments on a couple of them which might make you chuckle mildly. On a side note, there were in fact quite a few hotties at this years GenCon! I invite all other newbie (or old) girly gamers to take the power away from the above average sized guy gamers and give them something to think about other than Mountain Dew and assorted bags of chips. Get in those tight skimpy fantasy inspired giggity-giggity outfits and make us drool over your woman flesh!

You chicky-poos out there have given me a reason to go back next year. Thank you.

* Updated on October 3, 2008:You want the lyrics, you get the lyrics!

one step at a time, we’ll be walking single file
Not taking the end, i remember the last time
The wizard was slain by a wraith’s level drain
surprise rounds are a whore, resurection spell again

I’m taking a 5-foot step, initiative of 10
we’re swarmed by zombies, get priest to turn undead
Why’d we come here at night, why are you taking a right?
We agreed always take lefts every single friggin’ time

Head back to the inn now, rest

Heading back in daytime, next magic item’s mine
Entering dungeon, getting pumped up for this grind
half-dragon template on a troll-blooded dire ape
Goblins, kobolds and orcs, and a fiendish ogre mage

I think that’s an ilithid, and a displacer beast
Is that a green slaad, a floating beholder head
Did I cross the line, aren’t these all copyright
Umber hulk, yuan-ti, githyanki, and githzerai

Getting handed a can of the whop-ass

Let the battle begin, owning an ancient dragon
Everybody spread, save against its acid breath
Reflex save 39, rogue tumble check, no damange die
Sucker, I got you beat with my dragon slaying vorpal knife

They’ll all meet my d20 die

post Just In: The Band “Brad Sucks” Lies About Sucking

June 27th, 2008

Filed under: Music — NunoXEI @ 4:05 pm

Oh my holy crap, how did I NOT find this earlier! Boy, do I ever have a treat for all you out there who can respect finding a precious gem in the middle of a rock query!

There’s this band I came across of Jamendo called “Brad Sucks”–the only negative thing I have to say about the band and album is that they chose the WORST name ever. Why? Because what the band does is everything completely opposite of “suck”.

I love fun simple covers and with a name like “Brad Sucks” titled “I Don’t Know What I’m Doing” I took a gamble when I clicked–as I often do–and awaited something to hit me so violently noobish that I had no choice but to immediately click back or close my browser before my larynx spontaneously exploded in gag-rejection. So, I click on the first song and get hit with a crazy mix of techno-indie rock–What the Hell?!? The song is called “Making Me Nervous” and is thoroughly sticky on the mind.

It has been months since I stumbled on something that so completely energized my attention span that I could do nothing else but listen to the whole album. No lie, 40 minutes and 47 seconds of my life amazed and captivated.

Well, not entirely motionless. I had to find the lowdown on this band. He released this album in 2001 digitally and then compiled it, totally fan-funded, as a CD for self release in 2005. Oh, oh, did I mention that this band is only ONE guy? For everything? He’s from Ottawa Canada (which excites me because I may just have to drive 9 hours away to see him perform live now). His name is Brad and considering the amount of digging I had to do I just started thinking his last name was indeed “Sucks” which would have been both unfortunate and mildly amusing, but his actual last name is Turcotte. Brad Turcotte.

On his site he mentions that he’s about to release a second album which makes me wish it was already September!

On more than one occasion Brad’s vocals took me back to the mid and late 90s when I’d listen to Beck and doddle or write randomly (”Fixing My Brain”, “Borderline”, “I Think I Started a Trend”, “Work Out Fine”). I also got a mild flashback to a crazy set of albums from The Magnetic Fields‘ 69 Love Songs or certain Ween tracks (”Sick as a Dog”) with his simple acoustic rhythm and melody. There’s even one track that took me back to my trips with my uncle’s surfing clan with Lenny Kravitz (”Bad Attraction”) playing on the deck. He goes from laid back introspective stuff (”Overreacting”) to some heavier alternative rock (”Time to Take Out the Trash”) without losing a second of interest from a listener–trust me–or please prove me wrong…

… So I can tell you that you’re wrong and then ignore you. Because you’re wrong.

Finally can I tell you what excited me the most about this discovery? I had stumbled across a band on Jamendo while in Amsterdam this winter called “Tryad“; a collective of artists who collaborate together. There’s one song in particular off their “Listen” album called “Mesmerize”. I liked it so much I got inspired to try to capture its feelings by creating an emo-inspired video called “Hair Cut”. Don’t believe I’d cut my hair on a whim of inspiration in an attempt to explore an emotional state? Here’s the final video!

Well, guess who was the ORIGINAL writer of this song? My double holy crap: Brad Sucks!!! His acoustic version definitely comes across more depressive than frustrated. It ever made me take out my acoustic after having it bagged away for 4 years! I’m also so pumped about this find because Brad has a veritable pay-what-you-want system for his CD and mp3s (ok, CDs are $5 minimum, but come on! Did I already mention this guy is awesome?)… He’s also released the source files of his music for community re-mixing! How much more creative commons friendly do he have to be?! The entire digital album is designated: By Attribution - Non-Commercial - Share Alike for interested parties: That means download or buy a copy and pass it out to as many friends/family as you like legally!

I can’t even express how much I respect this guy. How often can I say, “Wow this whole album frigging rocks my clean socks off!” to a pro-released album nowadays? It’s rare as unicorn poop. (OK maybe not that rare: aka IMPOSSIBLE… since unicorns don’t exist and all… not of the horse variety anyways).

Now excuse me while I go buy his CD and put my cash down on a pre-order and wait pseudo-patiently for September 8th before I start overreacting…
