post Digginshit 001: The Liar Sarah Palin

September 18th, 2008

The premiere strip is out! I’ve had this idea since I was living in Amsterdam last winter. I got very caught up in DIgg until I realized I was entertained more by the comments then by knowing what the “top news” was. These characters and concepts were born there, ironically while I was pooping. The two seemed to come together in marriage quite nicely on the porcelain Buddha.

I also need to give a tremendous headsup to Meghan Murphy who does the kawaii not webcomic! When her book came in the mail yesterday and I read the “Kawaii Not Manifesto” I was both inspired and moved to be a part of her REVOLUTION! She inspired the kawaii direction of the faces and the strip was ready to roll!

post Stirring the Poop, or Mixxing the Awesome

June 18th, 2008

Filed under: Technology — NunoXEI @ 8:54 pm

I’ve been falling in love with Mixx for about three months now. I still don’t use it as much as I like—been too busy with all the traveling around Europe, being computerless while there due to a video card death on my macbook pro, grandma passing away and plenty other “life” complications. What is still absolute though is my willingness to see Mixx be used more often by more people.

Here’s what I like about Mixx so far, and maybe this is all accidental, coincidental, incidental, whateverental… I like that it’s incredibly poop-light. You know, lacking the orfuses that expell poop to see how many people sniff around to react to the obnoxiousness of it all. There’s another three-letter-double-constinent-ending website out there that is the best example of this. If you don’t know what I’m talking about yet, just do some digging aroung the net a while. You’ll find it.

Another thing I love about Mixx is the ability to get an RSS feed to almost any damn thing you want! If aggregating feeds isn’t your thing, then they also have a kick ass personalized home page type setup called “Your Mixx”. Once you click on “Add to YourMixx” on the right bar you can pick what your Interests are from suggested topics or just pick your own “topics” by creating them yourself by typing tag words in at the bottom of the page. No “web 2.0” category? Make one with a tag!

Did I mention there’re less assholes, both artificial (wanna-bees) and natural (birth defect)? Granted there’s likely an extremely lower user rate on Mixx, but to this day I can respect the fact that who comes to Mixx may very well be the people who are starting to get frustrated with the offensive level of Digg users.

As an aside: I am actually amused at some witty Digg user comments. Some people are brilliant assholes and I can respect that kind of humour. When name calling, racism, ignorance and cheuvanistic behaviour become an expected norm—then that’s sometimes enough to make me take a couple weeks break.

Back onto the real topic here. Because Mixx is relatively new to the game, there are less widgets and plugins (etc) to REALLY tap into it’s awesomeness. I searched everywhere for something that could be used for WordPress. No luck. Not even for a sidebar widget like Digg’s (on the right bar of this site).

I then came across FeedWordPress, a plugin that pulls in RSS feeds as WordPress posts. Now, remember the point I made above? The one marvelling at ALL the RSS options on Mixx? Well, you can get one for your username! With this knowledge (thanks to the awesome support help from @mixx on Twitter) the result is that now any comment I make on a Mixx story is automatically drawn into my blog!

This encourages me to get more involved and I hope others start looking for way to use and integrate Mixx into their web life. I really do stand behind it becoming a strong community gaining its integrity and long term strength from its user-based editorial management opportunities that takes advantage of users who have proven themselves with “karma”.

Pass on over to Mixx and give the site a check, click around and experience the experience! If Digg has tainted your perspective on the “collective editorial selection” user experience, please give Mixx a chance to remedy those feelings of disappointment. No go Mixx it up! (Psst… add me: NunoXEI)
